In the latter half of September, the top of the rice plants finally begin to droop. This is like a Japanese greeting and the rice is saying, “hey Mr. Farmer, it is time to harvest me. Another sign that harvest season is here is the appearance of the red flower called cluster amaryllis. (Mom is the one who knew the name. Dad just called it a red flower). I love this flower and every year, I pose so Dad can get a picture of me standing or sitting in front of them. Morning is best when the combination of the orange glow of the sunrise, and the golden shine of the matured rice makes these red flowers shine all the more brightly.
9月も後半になったら稲穂の頭がだんだん下がってくる。日本人の挨拶みたいに稲の頭が下がってきたら、そろそろ稲刈り、収穫の時！ちょうど稲刈りの時、田んぼの横に赤い花が咲きだす。この赤い花がそろそろ稲を刈ってもいいよぉっていう合図でもあるんだって。赤い花はヒガンバナって呼ばれたりマンジュシャゲって呼ばれたり、いろんな呼び方があるってママが言ってた。僕はこの赤い花が大好き。朝日とか夕日の中で金色に輝く稲と赤いヒガンバナのコントラストにうっとりする。
