Dad’s alarm starts lighting up at 5:20 with a soft orange glow. <\/p>\n

By 5:45, it is full sunrise and the birds start chirping. A quick button push silences them, but the light remains. The artificial sun is up. The real one is still more than an hour away. Currently, its’s dark outside. It is raining. It is cold. <\/p>\n

The will to get up is not so strong in Dad this morning. It’s not so strong in me either. I am going to need to go out, but I don’t need<\/em> to do it while it is still so early. So dark. So wet and cold. <\/p>\n

I hear Dad trying to be quiet. He thinks I am waiting. I am not. Twenty minutes later, it is still dark and wet, but I hear him and sense that he has finally summoned the willpower to get out of bed and get dressed. When he comes downstairs, I don\u2019t get up. I am still circled in on myself on the sofa. I’m as warm as I can make myself.<\/p>\n

When Dad sits it down on the sofa, I immediately roll over for a belly scratch. He does not seem to be in any rush to go outside . Truth be told, I’m not either. We have been doing this morning routine for years, but usually after a few scratches, he is ready to head outside. Not today. That suits me just fine because I am in no hurry to get off of the sofa. I can hear the rain. I know it is cold outside. My preference is to lounge on the sofa as long as possible. I squirm around on my back until i find a comfortable place on his leg to rest my head. I soon fall back asleep. <\/p>\n

I think he was hoping I would give him the energy to go outside, but that is not the case. After about 15 minutes of extended sleep time for me, Dad decides it is time to go out.<\/p>\n

He lets me know with a “it’s time to go buddy,” and while I didn’t want to hear it, I do, and I know he is right. <\/p>\n

So I dutifully begin my dismount off of the sofa. I move in slow-motion: front legs first, extended stretch of the shoulders and spine, followed by the back left leg, then the back right. The full dismount is completed with a bit downward dog for that extra stretch. <\/p>\n

Now the tables have turned, and I am waiting for him. He gets up, almost as slowly as me, and starts putting on his coat. I ready myself by the door. I sit dutifully while he puts on my collar and attaches the lead (it takes two connections because as we found out a few weeks ago, one is not enough\u2026<\/em>). <\/p>\n

Once the door is open, I am ready to go. He gets the umbrella and we hit the street. Now I’ve got some energy and want to stretch my legs. Stretch them enough that I can leave my mark higher on the assorted trees and poles we pass than any other dog. We do one extended circle of the neighborhood and end up back home.<\/p>\n

Once again, I wait patiently while he gives me a quick shower to replace the rain water in my fur with fresher<\/em> water. It’s a Mom thing. She made the rule. We just obey it. I am a little bit excited now, so can’t sit still. Dad tries to dry me, a procedure I usually love, but now, I am making it difficult. You see it is breakfast time and I already heard the sound of my meal being poured into my bowl. It’s always better to eat now than later, so I wrestle free of the towel Dad is trying to dry me with and sit by the door just out of his reach\u2026waiting for my chance to charge into the living room. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Dad finally decides to throw in the same towel he just tried to dry me with and reaches over to twist the door knob. He is kind of stretching himself to reach, so he can\u2019t really open it, but now that the seal between the door and the frame is cracked, I no longer need his help to secure my entry. I push it further open with my nose and charge into the room acting like I am full of piss and vinegar, when in actuality, I am empty of the former and have never tried the latter. Within seconds, I\u2019ve got myself head-deep into my bowl of kibble and all is good with the world. <\/p>\n

I’ll say good morning<\/em> to Mom when I am done. Just give me a minute\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
