Lately, on the morning walks, Dad has been taking me by car to one of our local walking places. We don\u2019t drive very far\u2026maybe only for 5 or 10 minutes. But with that short little drive, we are able to avoid a lot of the \u201cboring\u201d parts of our neighborhood. <\/p>\n

As it gets to be winter, in early mornings (6am) it is still dark. The sun schedules its rise at around 6:30. So we get out before the sun and usually enjoy the sunrise together.<\/p>\n

The only bad thing about this is that in our neighborhood, there are a lot of dogs and a lot of old people doing their morning constitutionals. For the most part, I don\u2019t mind the people. They usually say \u201chello\u201d to me and smile. But now that they are all masked up, I can\u2019t tell if there are smiles behind those masks or a threatening display of teeth. Just in case, I bark at them. It is a good natured bark though, and if they can see behind my sharp pearly whites, they might notice that my tail is usually wagging. <\/p>\n

What I hate though are a couple of Shiba-ken dogs that live in this area. They have no manners at all. They walk about 2 meters ahead of their dad and lead him around by his hands. I get along with everybody, but I do not get along with those dogs. When they see me, or better yet, if I see them first, I go into full aggressive mode. Or at least as aggressive as I can be, being a gentle soul and all. Those dogs also go full of aggression: barking, snarling, and pulling their dad along. As they seem to be on the same schedule as us, too many mornings had us meeting up head to head on a narrow path with nowhere to go. On the days when dad changed things up, they would also change things up, and we would still bump into them. <\/p>\n

Finally, Dad had enough, and instead of starting our walks with that hassle, he drives us beyond where we would see them and beyond the more heavily trafficked areas of our neighborhood. So now, when we leave the house, we walk straight to the car, Dad opens the trunk and my traveling crate and I jump in. Bing, bang, boom, doors are closed and we are on our way. After a few minutes of that, Dad parks in a small parking lot for a rice cleaning station where I am friendly with the farmer. She not only lets us park there any time we want, but she also lets me run around in her rice paddies any time of the year when there is no rice growing. <\/p>\n

From that starting spot, we go towards the hills and then choose left or right. And with each choice of direction, other choices present themselves. So we can walk through rice paddies to a river and a little dog run park (that I can easily get out of!). We can go up the hill, and down a little path on one side of a golf course. We can go up and down the other side of the golf course, in a little place I call \u201cKV\u201d, for Kawabata Valley. We named it that because the home of a famous Japanese author, Kawabata Yasunari<\/a>, is nearby. Or we can go further from the golf course and up a bigger hill to get to a big cemetery Dad calls Grape Garden. The actual name is Grave Garden<\/a>\u2026I don\u2019t get it either, but I guess it is funny in Japanese, or at least funny to Dad. Anyway, from that one starting point, we have 8 or more different combinations of walking paths that are arranged in such a way that we almost never have to retrace our outward path.<\/p>\n

It is a great area to walk because there are few people, no cars, not many dogs and a ton of muddy wet grassy rice paddies. Sometimes I get to run free, but usually Dad likes to keep me close. We have seen some wild cats and been warned of wild boars. You never know what is hiding in the woods. Sometimes I see stuff that Dad doesn\u2019t and sometimes he turns us around when he sees something he doesn\u2019t wanting me to get my nose in. It is a pretty good partnership: us looking out for each other. In addition to afternoons and evenings, mornings are my favorite part of the day.<\/p>\n

I wonder where we will go tomorrow morning!<\/p>\n
